Irish Sea Moss

Irish Sea Moss | Northern Prince Edward Island is known for harvesting Irish Sea Moss on horseback. Meet two mossers, from Tignish, PEI, Ernest Perry and Earl Gavin as they share their stories as mossers and fishermen. Irish Sea Moss contains the ingredient, Carrageenan, a thickening agent used in products such as toothpaste, dairy products, puddings, plastic and mascara. Earl trucks his Percheron horse, Bill to the beach, and Ernest gives a demonstration on how the moss is collected. Bill is just learning his job as a moss horse. Ernest explains the kind of horse needed, the harness and the equipment used for this job. When the mossing conditions are right, up to 150 horses can been seen in the water at a time. In this video you will learn more about our Canadian heritage in Northern PEI.
